Can You Take CBD Oil on a Plane in the UK? 100ml and 1mg
Can you take CBD oil on a plane in the UK? Two tests apply: the airport liquids limit and the Home Office 1mg exempt-product rule, both read on gov.uk.
By Staff, CBD Wire
You can take CBD oil on a plane in the UK within two sets of rules. At security it is a liquid: most airports cap hand-luggage containers at 100ml. In law, the Home Office says consumer CBD products contain controlled cannabinoids, and only those meeting its exempt-product test, which includes a 1mg limit, escape the import and export prohibitions.
This is an evergreen explainer. This desk read each gov.uk page cited below on 23 October 2026.
The two tests at a glance
| Question | What decides it | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Will security let the bottle through? | Container size: 100ml at most airports, up to 2 litres at some | Gov.uk liquids page |
| Is the oil itself controlled? | Pure CBD is not; products with controlled cannabinoids are Class B | Home Office factsheet |
| Can it cross the border? | Only an exempt product escapes the import and export prohibitions | Home Office factsheet |
Is CBD oil allowed through airport security?
The gov.uk liquids guidance treats a bottle of oil like any liquid, and gov.uk says the rules have changed at some UK airports, so check with yours and pack liquids in hold baggage where you can.
Can you take CBD oil on a plane in the UK legally?
The Home Office drug licensing factsheet, updated 3 October 2024, sets the drugs-law test. Pure CBD, as an isolated substance, is not controlled under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971. But the Home Office agrees with the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs that consumer CBD products contain varying amounts of controlled cannabinoids such as THC.
Those products are Class B unless they meet the exempt-product definition in Regulation 2 of the Misuse of Drugs Regulations 2001. All three limbs must be met; one is that no component part holds more than one milligram of a controlled drug. The factsheet says qualifying is decided case by case. Our 1mg rule explainer and Trip legality check apply it.
Is the UK limit 0.2% THC?
British Cannabis’s travel page says only CBD oil with THC below 0.2% is allowed through UK customs. The Home Office factsheet, as read, gives no THC percentage: its test is the exempt-product definition. Our hemp explainer covers the plant itself.
Frequently asked questions
Can I take CBD oil in my hand luggage in the UK? Yes, if the bottle fits your airport’s liquids rule. Gov.uk says most airports refuse containers over 100ml at security, even part full; some may allow up to 2 litres. Where asked, liquids go in one clear resealable bag of up to a litre. Rules have changed at some UK airports, so check with yours.
Can you bring CBD oil into the UK? Only an exempt product is clear of the import prohibition. Gov.uk lists controlled drugs among banned goods for personal imports, and the Home Office says consumer CBD products contain controlled cannabinoids, so they are Class B unless they meet the exempt-product definition, including the 1mg limit.
Do you have to declare CBD oil at customs? None of the gov.uk pages this desk read says CBD oil must, or need not, be declared. They do say controlled drugs are banned goods and only an exempt product escapes the import prohibition. A retailer page saying declaration is not typically required is not an official source.
Check the rules of the country you are flying to separately. The Home Office calls its factsheet general guidance, not legal advice, and so is this. The factsheet does not cover medicines or food rules, which are separate. For adults.
