Is CBD Oil Halal? Two Published Conditions and the UK Rule

Is CBD oil halal? Two published views set conditions on THC, one with a number. Here they are beside the UK 1mg legal test and what a lab report shows.

By Staff, CBD Wire

Is CBD oil halal? This site does not rule on that. Two published views state a condition: IslamQA’s 2021 answer accepts a negligible, traceless amount of THC never deliberately added, and Alzeer et al. (2021) accept THC under 1% with CBD over 99%.

An evergreen explainer; each source was read by this desk on 15 October 2026.

Is CBD oil halal? Two published conditions

SourceConditionNumber
IslamQA answer 259044 (8 August 2021)THC is haraam and never deliberately added; if already present, negligible and traceless, nothing wrong with taking itNone
Alzeer et al., Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research (2021)THC not intentionally added or left; THC meant as an intoxicant is non-HalalTHC under 1%, CBD over 99%
Home Office factsheet (UK law, not a halal test)Exempt product: no one component part above the limit1mg of controlled cannabinoid

Alzeer et al. call pure CBD permissible “particularly in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals”.

The Home Office drug licensing factsheet, updated 3 October 2024, says pure isolated CBD is not controlled under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, but THC is Class B and consumer CBD products contain varying amounts. Products are exempt only if they meet all three limbs, including the 1mg limit; the Home Office wants that tested by an ISO/IEC 17025-accredited lab. More in the 1mg rule explainer.

The rank-1 Goodrays page gives 0.2% THC; the factsheet’s test is milligrams.

What can a buyer check?

The THC line on the batch lab report, as in this site’s Trip THC check. Goodrays notes full-spectrum CBD carries low THC, and some gummies use gelatine.

Frequently asked questions

Is CBD considered haram? Neither published source read here says so outright; both set conditions. IslamQA calls THC haraam and bars adding it deliberately, but accepts a negligible, traceless amount. Alzeer et al. accept THC under 1% with CBD over 99% if it was not intentionally added or left. Neither is this site’s ruling.

Is CBD oil halal in the UK? UK law does not answer that. The Home Office test is legal, not religious: no component part may contain more than one milligram of a controlled cannabinoid such as THC. A product can pass it and still fail IslamQA’s no-trace condition, so read the batch report’s THC line.

Are CBD drinks halal in the UK? The same THC conditions apply, plus the label. IslamQA’s answer says it is preferable to avoid adding alcohol to medicine. Neither source, as read here, names a drink, so check the batch report for THC and the label for alcohol or animal-derived ingredients.

This reports published views and UK rules, not religious guidance. CBD products are food supplements, not medicines; if you take medication, speak to a healthcare professional first. For adults.
