How Long Does CBD Oil Last? What the UK Bottle Date Means
How long does CBD oil last? Brand figures run 12 to 24 months, but the UK date on the bottle is a food date. What best before means, and who disagrees.
By Staff, CBD Wire
How long does CBD oil last? Brand shelf-life figures range from about 12 to 24 months for an unopened bottle, but the date on your bottle is the real answer. CBD sold to swallow is handled in Great Britain as a food, and gov.uk says a food date is either a use-by (safety) or a best before (quality).
This is an evergreen explainer, not news. Every figure below comes from a page this desk read on 8 October 2026, and every brand figure is the company’s own claim rather than a test.
Why is a CBD oil date a food date in the UK?
The Food Standards Agency’s business guidance on CBD describes itself as guidance on cannabidiol as a novel food; it was last updated on 28 August 2026. That puts CBD oil sold to consume under food rules; for related limits, see the 10mg daily advice and the 1mg rule, which comes from the controlled-drugs exemption rules rather than food labelling. Being handled as a novel food is not authorisation; the site’s read of the FSA guidance and the list it points to explains the difference.
Use-by or best before: what the date on the bottle means
The gov.uk food labelling guide says most prepacked foods must show one or the other. Use-by relates to safety and must appear on foods that go off quickly, such as meat products. Best before relates to quality: after it, food is usually safe but may not be at the same quality, and you can use sight, taste or smell to decide.
The guide also says manufacturers decide which date to apply. So this desk cannot tell you which one your bottle must carry. Of the pages read, Nordic Oil and Blessed CBD use best-before language and Simply CBD says each bottle carries its own expiration date.
How long does CBD oil last, per the pages read?
| Publisher (page date) | Figure given | Runs from | On opening |
|---|---|---|---|
| Healthline, US (12 Feb 2021) | 1 to 2 years, typically | Not stated | Not stated |
| Simply CBD, UK retailer (28 Apr 2023) | Its oils about 12 months; water-soluble about 14 | Purchase | No opened figure |
| Nordic Oil, UK site (updated 31 Aug 2026) | No unopened figure (“quite long”) | Opening | Use within 6 months |
| Blessed CBD, UK seller (23 Jul 2024) | Oil 12 to 24 months | Unopened | Does not shorten it if stored correctly |
The two UK sellers that address opening disagree outright. None of the four pages publishes test results behind its figure, and Simply CBD’s numbers cover only its own products.
How should you store CBD oil?
The advice converges. Healthline says heat and light speed degradation and suggests room temperature, around 16 to 21C, in the dark. Nordic Oil says to keep it dark and cool because light and air affect quality. Blessed CBD says to tighten the cap after every use and not to refrigerate, because MCT-based oils thicken and turn cloudy when chilled. The gov.uk guide adds that food which is not stored properly can lose quality before its best before date.
How long do the effects of CBD oil last?
That is a different question, and the third-ranked result answers it. Releaf, a UK medical-cannabis clinic, says only around 6% of CBD swallowed reaches the bloodstream and that timing varies with dose, route and metabolism. This post does not cover what CBD does to a body.
Frequently asked questions
Does CBD oil expire? Yes, in the sense that it carries a date and declines in quality. Every shelf-life page this desk read says CBD oil degrades over time, and the brands print a date on the bottle. Under the gov.uk labelling guide, that date is either a use-by (safety) or a best before (quality), and the manufacturer chooses which. Read the label before any article, this one included.
Does CBD oil go bad? It can. Blessed CBD says spoiled oil looks murky, very dark or unusually thick and smells sour, musty or off, while oil that turns cloudy in the cold should clear after 10 to 15 minutes at room temperature. Nordic Oil says expired oil may cause unwanted side effects, in the worst case an upset stomach. Those are the companies’ statements, not tests.
How long does CBD stay good? On the pages read, about 12 to 24 months unopened, with one exception that matters. Blessed CBD says an opened bottle stored correctly lasts roughly as long as an unopened one; Nordic Oil advises using its oil within 6 months of opening. Neither page read publishes test results behind its figure, so the date and storage advice on your own bottle come first.
The figures here are the publishers’ own and reflect their pages as read on 8 October 2026. CBD oil is a food supplement, not a medicine; if you take medication or have a health concern, speak to a healthcare professional first. For adults.
